#167 - Chapter 13: Going South
#167 - Chapter 13: Going South
Liu Yuan saw a section of broken wooden beam and looked up. The break was about three-fifths of the way up. He sighed helplessly. The inertia of the plot was so strong; Bran still couldn't avoid this calamity.
Seeing Liu Yuan arrive, Benjen stood up and shook his head, saying, "It should be an accident. Bran is such a lively and active child. The servants said he often climbs the broken tower, but this time he lost his footing."
Liu Yuan unfastened his sword and handed it to him. "Bran is a child I personally taught. This shouldn't have happened. I'll go up and take a look." With that, he leaped up, using the wall to propel himself four or five meters high. In a few breaths, he had climbed halfway up the tower. The slippery moss on the bricks didn't affect him, and he quickly reached the broken wooden railing. On the brick below, there was half a handprint. The moss that had been scraped away was clearly visible, and there was blood on the position of the fingerprints.
In his mind, he quickly reconstructed the scene. He looked up. Continuing to climb along that position, he arrived near the window. There were artificial marks on the window and the surrounding wooden beams. He climbed in through the window and stroked the fresh break on the severed vine to the left. Then, he carefully observed this floor, coming to a place where the dust had clearly been disturbed. According to the indentations, there was more than one person. Then, he picked up a strand of golden hair from the ground. It was long and must have belonged to a woman.
Liu Yuan basically reconstructed the scene in his mind. When he watched the American drama, he didn't feel anything, but these two bastards could attack a child. Unforgivable!
Just as Liu Yuan was about to settle the score with a certain Jaime, an idea flashed in his mind. He turned around and came to the window, facing inward, and gently leaped backward, stretching his legs to kick the wooden beam, imitating Bran's fall, and reaching out to grab the vine. Then, he fell onto the broken wooden railing, reached out to steady himself, somersaulted, and fell straight down. Just as he was about to land, he kicked off the tower, and his body landed lightly and steadily on the ground.
His series of actions stunned everyone. Some people even applauded involuntarily, but Liu Yuan's face was very ugly. It was normal for Jaime and Cersei to want to silence Bran after he discovered their affair. However, Bran wouldn't have fallen so easily with his skills. Judging from the scene, he did fight back.
Moreover, he made multiple attempts to save himself, but accidents occurred in succession. So many coincidences happening at the same time could only be a conspiracy. Most importantly, he didn't find any traces of Bran's climb earlier. He probably knew who did it, but what was the purpose?
Liu Yuan suppressed the anger in his heart, took the sword from Benjen's hand, and said, "Let's go! Bran must have fallen like I did just now. Let's go see how the maesters are treating him. You know, my medical grades at the Citadel were excellent. Maybe I can help."
Liu Yuan arrived at the main building, where many people were gathered. The Stark couple and their children were there, as well as the Lannisters, who were peeking from a corner.
Liu Yuan said to Jory Cassel, who was guarding the door, "Open the door. I'll go help!" Jory looked at the Duke, and seeing that Eddard didn't object, he opened the door.
About two hours later, the door opened again. Maester Luwin walked out looking tired and gave Catelyn a smile, "Young Master Bran has passed the most dangerous stage. There should be no danger to his life, but it's hard to say when he will wake up."
Liu Yuan walked out of the room with a straight face. Bran's life had been saved. He suffered two heavy blows to the first lumbar vertebra and the twelfth thoracic vertebra when he fell. Although he had reset the spine, with the current medical conditions, it was impossible to detect whether the nervous system was damaged, but it would likely cause lower limb paralysis. His head and other vital parts, however, were surprisingly undamaged.
As for the doctor's orders and condition, Maester Luwin would naturally explain. After saying goodbye to everyone, he returned to the main castle. He sat silently in front of the fireplace, pondering. Things that he didn't understand before were linked together one by one, and now there was a clear thread. After a long time, a sneer appeared on his lips: No wonder! The layout is so far-reaching. Only after experiencing despair and facing that only glimmer of hope can one be desperate. Then, let's see who laughs last!
Despite so many things happening, the King's return date had been set. Even if Catelyn was dissatisfied, Eddard would go south according to the previous plan. Sansa, as a candidate for marriage with the royal family, naturally had to go to King's Landing to receive some court etiquette in advance. And Arya was just there to make up the numbers. Originally, the plan was to have her receive court education together, and also to meet more talented young people in the south, to prepare for future marriages.
The eldest son, Robb, stayed in Winterfell, fully exercising the rights of Warden of the North and head of the Stark family, and taking care of his mother and injured brother.
Jon Snow followed Benjen north, resolutely joined the Night's Watch, and pursued the values in his heart.
On the night before departure, Liu Yuan came to Bran's ward. Jon had just left, and Eddard and Catelyn were both there. He made a suggestion in person: "Duke Eddard, we have been together like family for many years, and I also have feelings for the children. I am very distressed by Bran's condition. According to my diagnosis, he will be in a coma for another one to two months. With the departure imminent, I plan to adopt Rickon as my adopted son. I don't know if you agree."
Eddard: "Why would you suddenly have this idea?"
Liu Yuan: "Actually, I've been thinking about it for a long time. The previous candidate was Bran. In this situation, you are taking two daughters south. Lady Catelyn has to guard the injured Bran, and no one will take care of Rickon, so it's better to leave him to me to teach. At least I can guarantee that no one can hurt him before I die."
Originally, Catelyn intended to object, but Liu Yuan's last sentence moved her. Catelyn, with a prayer doll wrapped in her hand, nodded to Eddard.
In this way, little Rickon also joined the southward team. In order to take care of Rickon's travel, Liu Yuan sent him a small black horse and personally made him a pair of children's saddles.
On the day of departure, the soldiers on the city wall blew their horns. The King's advance cavalry set off first, and the entire team slowly started.
Eddard looked towards the main building. Catelyn didn't come out to see him off today. She didn't have enough courage to say goodbye to her husband and three children, and was crying sadly in the room guarding Bran.
"Ned, it's time to go!" Robert rode his horse to his side and patted him on the shoulder.
Eddard smiled bitterly and said to his eldest son, Robb, "Stark men, take care of your mother and Bran, and take care of yourselves." Then he rode his horse to catch up with the team.
