#183 - Chapter 29: Palace Changes (I)

Ed's original plan was to send his two daughters out of the city, and then he would hold the situation in King's Landing, waiting for Stannis to return from Dragonstone.

All this was disrupted by Joffrey's sudden announcement of his ascension to the throne, and he hurriedly took all the guards away.

In the courtyard of the Prime Minister's Tower, the high palace walls blocked the noise from outside. Steward Poole directed the servants to pack their luggage, and they were loading some large items onto the carriages. Suddenly, a group of Lannister soldiers rushed in from outside, killing anyone they saw. The Northmen, even the servants, naturally grabbed whatever they could find and fought back. Although it caused some trouble, it did not affect the outcome, and soon these people were killed.

In the tower corridor, Sansa and others, who had originally planned to look for Arya, also heard the screams from outside. Septa Mordane calmly said, "Lady Sansa, you and Jeyne must return to your rooms immediately, lock the doors tightly, and do not open them no matter who comes. No matter what happens outside, do not come out." As she spoke, she straightened her clothes and strode downwards. Seeing the Lannister soldiers pouring in ahead, Septa Mordane spread her arms and used her frail body to block the corridor, loudly saying, "You guys, you are actually killing innocent people, the Seven Gods will punish you."

Several Lannister soldiers hesitated, and a tall Kingsguard walked over. He pushed aside the soldiers in front and unhesitatingly stabbed Septa Mordane's body with his sword. He reprimanded, "What are you all doing here? How can you be stopped by an old woman? Go in and find the people, and remember not to harm the young girls, or I will personally twist off your heads." Then, he kicked Septa Mordane's body to the side.

The Hanging Gardens, this was where Arya usually practiced. Syrio was still using an ironwood sword, teaching Arya some sword skills for close combat. He easily parried Arya's attack: "Arya, you are doing very well. The sword your teacher gave you also fits your hand shape very well, but you need to strengthen your practice. Remember that in this kind of close combat, a backhand swing might be faster. But be aware that your strength is not enough. If the opponent is wearing armor, you must avoid the front and look for weak points." Syrio gave more practical instructions, and Arya listened very carefully. She liked Syrio's teaching style as both a teacher and a friend.

Suddenly, Syrio sheathed his sword and retreated, his brow furrowed as he listened carefully.

"What's wrong? Why did you stop...?" Arya asked.

Syrio raised his hand to interrupt her: "Shhh, I think I hear...screams!" The previous screams had stopped, and what he heard were heavy footsteps. Soon, the doors of the courtyard corridor were pushed open, and a Kingsguard in golden armor and several Lannister soldiers in red armor walked in.

After he came in, he glanced at her and said, "Arya Stark, come with us! Your father sent us to pick you up."

Syrio grabbed the girl and stood in front of her, saying, "Lord Eddard, why didn't he send his own men? I find it strange, why are Lannister soldiers coming?"

The Kingsguard's tone was unkind: "Shut up, you are just a small dancing master, don't meddle in other people's business."

Arya gripped the hilt of her sword: "My father would never send you guys. I will not go with you, please leave, this is the Prime Minister's Tower, you are not welcome here."

"Hahaha~ You guys go and grab her, remember not to hurt the girl." The Kingsguard laughed loudly and ordered his soldiers forward.

"Bang~!" The Lannister soldier was slapped in the face by Syrio's backhand with the wooden sword. Even though it was a wooden sword, it knocked the guy unconscious.

Syrio took Arya's practice sword, holding a wooden sword in each hand, and adopted an attacking stance. He said disdainfully, "You are really shameless, actually bullying a little girl with so many people. I am Syrio Forel, the former First Sword of Braavos. When you talk to me, you better show some respect."

"You all go together, kill this Braavosi, and grab that girl." Four soldiers rushed up! Syrio moved lightly, actually handling the siege with ease. His wooden sword could always appear at the opponent's weak points, such as the knees, thighs, wrists, armpits, etc. In just a few rounds, he knocked the four Lannister soldiers to the ground.

The Kingsguard drew his sword: "A bunch of useless trash, remember you clown, you will be killed by Kingsguard Meryn Trant." Like a chariot, he rushed forward, and with a forceful chop, Syrio's right-hand wooden sword was broken.

Knowing that the wooden sword was useless, Syrio used his foot to pick up a soldier's one-handed sword and said, "Arya, go! Leave here immediately."

Arya: "Let's go together!"

Syrio smiled: "The First Sword cannot retreat in the face of battle. Remember what I told you, when facing death, not yet. Go, child!"

Meryn Trant: "No! Stop her. Get out of my way! You damn dwarf." Although Syrio tried his best to stop him, two soldiers still chased after her one after another.

Syrio used an unfamiliar weapon and fought Meryn for dozens of rounds, but he, who was even thinner, could not keep up with his stamina. The other wooden sword was also broken. Finally, in a collision, he failed to hold the one-handed sword and was slashed in the back by Meryn. But reacting quickly, he stabbed the broken wooden sword into the gap of Meryn Trant's helmet. He poked his left eye, and the furious Meryn kicked him in the chest. Syrio flew out, spitting out a mouthful of blood. Taking advantage of the opponent's madness, he rolled over and jumped out of the window. When the remaining two soldiers ran over to check, he was long gone.

"Ah! My eyes! You damn dwarf! I swear I will chop you up. Tear you to pieces." The angry Meryn Trant pushed away the soldiers and shouted loudly below, angrily waving his long sword and slashing the flowers, plants, and furniture near the window.

Arya was agile and ran very fast. Relying on her familiarity with the terrain, she actually got rid of the two soldiers. But she didn't know that a short, fat figure was quietly following behind her.

When Arya came outside, she saw Steward Poole lying in a pool of blood. She walked over and saw that several people around her had already been killed. She sighed inwardly, bent down and searched Poole's body for his wallet. Then a shadow was cast on her body. Looking up, it turned out to be a kitchen helper, a fourteen-year-old chubby boy.

Arya said, "Shap, it's dangerous here, leave quickly."

The little fat boy showed a sneer, blocking her way and said, "Where else can I go? I was looking for you, little wolf girl."
