#187 - Chapter 33: Courting Death (Part 3)
Tyrion bowed deeply: "Thank you, Father. I didn't expect you to send troops for me."
Tywin: "You left me no choice. The honor of the family has been violated. If it had been Jaime, he wouldn't have been captured so easily."
Tyrion: "We have different roles. He's tall and mighty, I'm smart and handsome."
Kevan: "Jaime has recently defeated the Riverland lords at the Golden Tooth and has besieged the Tully's home."
Tywin: "King Robert is dead, and now Joffrey is the new king. Eddard Stark has been imprisoned in the dungeons."
Tyrion said with a shocked expression: "You mean my sister is ruling King's Landing now? Seven hells! Could it get any worse than this?"
Kevan: "It seems it can. The Stark brat is getting impatient. He's leading his army south and is currently passing through the Neck."
Tyrion: "He's a spirited child, you'll like him. Oh! Speaking of war, I once made a promise to my friends in the mountains. The Lannisters always repay their debts. They need weapons, shields, and armor to equip about 3,000 men..."
A guard came to report from outside the door: "Reporting, Lord, Ser Addam reports that the Northern army has crossed the Neck."
Tywin stood up: "Excellent! The little wolf cub is marching in haste and will surely fall into the lion's mouth. Kevan, order the drummers to sound the assembly. Also, notify Jaime to keep a close watch on Riverrun and prevent the Tullys from breaking out."
Then Tywin came to the tribal chiefs and looked them over: "I've long heard that the men of the mountain clans are brave warriors. If you go to war with me, I guarantee you'll receive everything my son promised after the war, and even more."
Shagga didn't back down: "Let your son go to the battlefield with us. Before we get what he promised, this little lion's life is ours."
Tywin nodded: "Agreed, I promise. And I can advance some weapons to you in advance! But you have to show me your worth."
In King's Landing, when Fabry, covered in blood, returned to the Red Keep, it immediately caused an uproar. All the people who went to deliver the order, including the Kingsguard, were beheaded. Everyone was shocked. This was not just slapping the Lannister family's face, it was openly confronting the royal family.
Cersei even kicked Lancel off the bed, and Joffrey smashed several vases.
Petyr's mind raced. He was calculating how to drag his old superior, Adrian, into this mess. He didn't notice Varys looking at him with an idiotic gaze not far behind him.
The Small Council quickly convened again. Joffrey said furiously: "I want to kill him, that Garon dares to disregard the King's authority. He not only killed the people who went to deliver the decree, but also stuck Preston's head on a spear. I order you to send troops immediately to flatten Garon's territory. Chop off the heads of all the rioters there and stick them on spear tips, lining both sides of the Kingsroad, so everyone can see the consequences of disobeying the King's will."
Pycelle: "I agree with His Majesty! Now that His Majesty has just ascended the throne, and the matter of Eddard's rebellion has not been resolved, a small knight dares to come out against us. We must deal with him severely, otherwise it will set a very bad example for others."
Varys: "I'm sorry to interrupt. I have reservations about this. According to news from the front, Robb Stark has already crossed the Neck with more than 20,000 Northern troops. I believe that the stability of King's Landing should be the priority now, and it is not advisable to start a war lightly. If we lose, the damage to the royal family's reputation will be even greater."
Petyr: "If you're afraid of failure, then send more people over there. According to the surviving soldiers, the other side dispatched fifty elite cavalry. Based on this, it is speculated that there are at least a hundred ordinary soldiers in Garon's territory. We can send more troops! With a three or four times advantage in strength, we shouldn't lose, right?" Littlefinger didn't know much about war, but he could count. With several times the strength, even a pig could win, right?
Cersei finally decided: "Then let Ser Slynt go! Let him select five hundred... no, select eight hundred men from the City Watch to go on the expedition, and tell him to bring back Garon's head."
"Yes, Your Grace. I will draft the order now," Grand Maester Pycelle responded.
After the meeting, Varys came to the Red Keep's dungeon again. A black shadow was already waiting for him here. The man lifted his hood and it was Illyrio.
Illyrio: "Why are you so late?"
"I attended a last-minute meeting. Garon killed the Kingsguard sent by Cersei to deliver the decree. Those idiots are discussing how many people to send to wipe him out. Why are you here again?" Varys spread his hands.
Illyrio: "I just returned from Lys. We have trouble. After the death of Mis Toyn, the backup he arranged doesn't seem to have worked. Harry Strickland has taken over as the commander of the Golden Company and taken the mercenary group to Volantis. Jon Connington and I personally met with Harry and the commanders in the company, and finally stabilized them. Do you know what price I paid? Ten thousand gold dragons."
Varys: "Now is not the time. The wolf and the lion have not fought to the point of being inseparable, and the Reach and the Vale have not been involved. We still need time. When Daenerys's child is born, and the Dothraki cavalry join, even if it's only half, we will have enough power."
Illyrio: "Isn't Joffrey planning to attack Garon? This is a good opportunity to win him over. With his participation, our plan will be smoother."
Varys: "It's useless. With Garon's personality, no one can force him to make a decision. We should try to avoid conflict with him as much as possible. Bringing him in too early will cause unforeseen consequences, so I voted against it at the Small Council meeting."
Illyrio: "Okay! You have a point, so what should we do next?"
Varys: "I will try to stabilize the situation here and delay the full-scale conflict as much as possible. You should return to Pentos, appease Viserys, and if necessary, let Jon Connington reveal his identity and step into the open. Then, focus on raising money and stockpiling strategic materials."
Illyrio said helplessly: "Okay, I'll do as you say. You must be careful in King's Landing. Do you need me to send some people over to protect you?"
Varys smiled: "I have enough people. These outsiders are more likely to be exposed."
The newly minted Lord of Harrenhal, Janos Slynt, was in high spirits as he selected men in the City Watch camp. This was the first time he had traveled in such a high-profile manner since becoming a noble, so naturally he had to make it impressive. He needed to select some core members, as he would need enough people to govern Harrenhal in the future.
