#406 - Chapter 140: Bunyan
His words brought people back to their senses. They quickly began to move, carrying Stannis's body and Melisandre, who was clinging to him, backward.
Jon watched them leave, feeling a sense of relief. He knew he had a lot more to do, but for now, he needed to rest and gather his thoughts.
Just then, Jon noticed a tall figure cloaked in black standing silently under a tree. The person wore a long black robe with a hood that shadowed their face, making it impossible to see their features.
Jon tightened his grip on 'Longclaw,' watching the figure warily, and asked, "Who are you? Why are you helping us?"
The mysterious figure did not answer immediately but stared at Jon in silence, a strange light flickering in their eyes.
After a moment, the figure slowly spoke, "I have been watching your growth, Jon Snow. Seeing your accomplishments now fills me with pride. Ned would be proud of you if he were still alive."
Jon's heart leaped, his eyes widening as he looked at the man before him, tears of surprise and excitement welling up. He said in a trembling voice, "Are you... Uncle Benjen? Is it really you? That's wonderful, you're alive after all!"
Benjen nodded, then said, "In truth, I am dead, Jon. But for certain reasons, I exist in another form in this world. The Children of the Forest resurrected me using ancient ways and granted me special abilities. Jon, I have been watching you from the shadows since you first set foot beyond the Wall."
Jon listened to Benjen's story in shock. He had never imagined that he would meet Benjen again, let alone that he would have such a mysterious experience.
Benjen pulled back his hood, revealing a face that was both familiar and strange. One of his eyes was as blue as the deep night sky, while the other shone with a verdant light, as if containing endless mysteries; half of his face was covered with delicate vines, a symbol of life and nature.
Jon wanted to step forward, but the guards beside him immediately stopped him, warning him not to approach. However, Jon was convinced that Benjen would not hurt him. He pushed the guards away and took a step forward.
"He is my uncle, Benjen Stark! He is the Night's Watch's former First Ranger, and he is my family! Let me go, he won't hurt me!" Jon said loudly, his voice filled with determination and trust.
Benjen smiled at Jon, his eyes filled with comfort. He reached out to stop him from approaching, and said with emotion, "Jon, you have grown up, become strong and brave."
A tear flashed in Jon's eye, and he said, "Uncle Benjen, come with me! Let's go home together! Robb, Bran, Rickon, Sansa, Arya, everyone has returned to the North, and they all miss you very much. Let's go back together, let our family reunite!"
Benjen shook his head slightly, a hint of helplessness and sorrow in his eyes. He said softly, "No, Jon, I cannot return. My current state is between the living and the dead. I can only move with the power of magic. Once I step south of the Wall, I will lose my magic and truly die."
Jon frowned, unwilling to accept this fact. He clenched his fist and said firmly, "No, Uncle Benjen! You must come back, we need you! The North needs you! You can come back with me, there must be a way."
Benjen sighed and shook his head. "Jon, everyone has their own mission. The threat of the White Walkers is increasing, and the Night King's power is beyond your imagination. Go back and gather more people to fight the Night King. Only by uniting can humanity achieve victory. I cannot give you guidance, the real battle still depends on yourself." After speaking, Benjen's figure retreated into the forest, ignoring the burning trees, and disappeared.
On the sea, the cannon fire from the warships gradually subsided. The forest in front of the third line of defense was completely ablaze, the fierce flames reaching tens of meters high. Those who did not retreat from the forest could no longer return. The corpses lost in the forest turned to ashes in the fire. Even the White Walkers could not withstand such temperatures; they wailed as they turned into ice shards and then melted.
The Night King stared at the warships on the sea, the ice fog unable to block its sight. Humans had given it another surprise; this explosive weapon was very lethal to the White Walkers. Even if it were hit by a few, it could be killed. In tonight's battle, it lost more than two hundred White Walkers, and the number of wights was countless. Most of the corpses of the enemies killed were cremated and could not be replenished.
Through the flames, it could feel the human aura there constantly weakening. It could no longer let the humans be. The Night King waved its ice crystal sword and let out a sharp roar. More than a hundred tall White Walkers roared in response, leading a large number of wights to move to the right.
Returning to the human side, Melisandre tried everything she could. She even tried to infuse him with magic mouth-to-mouth, but she could not revive Stannis. Davos and other generals stood in a circle, watching all this, the light in their eyes growing dimmer and dimmer.
Stannis was dead, and the goal they had been loyal to and fought for no longer existed. The morale of Stannis's army plummeted. If they continued the fierce battle as before, they would collapse.
Melisandre's eyes were empty, staring blankly at Stannis's body. Her belief collapsed at this moment, and her faith in the Lord of Light wavered.
Davos gently patted her shoulder and comforted her, "My lady, we must leave here. There is no point in continuing to fight. I want to take His Majesty's body back to the Queen."
Jon said anxiously, "You can't leave yet, the evacuation work in the rear has not been completed, and the White Walkers are watching from across the way."
Davos scolded, "What does that have to do with us! Haven't we paid enough? Countless warriors have given their lives for them, and even His Majesty has sacrificed himself. This is not our war, we do not belong here! Now I want to take the remaining warriors home safely."
Jon: "Are you just giving up like this? This is a war between humans and White Walkers, and it must end with one side falling. Don't you want to avenge King Stannis?"
Davos said dejectedly: "His Majesty is dead! Everything here is meaningless to us."
Tormund: "Let them go! This was originally our battle, and the Southerners have already paid more than enough. Even without them, we will continue to persevere."
The dense ice fog gradually dissipated, and wisps of sunlight appeared. It was dawn!
