#485 - Chapter 219 The Overall Situation Has Been Decided
The four dragons simultaneously unleashed torrents of fire, completely engulfing the enemy's positions in a sea of flames. The massive Leviathan, in particular, continuously rained down scorching fireballs from high above, acting as a relentless bomber and bringing unending fear and destruction to the enemy.
The Allied forces' already faltering defense lines finally crumbled under such relentless assault, collapsing entirely. Just then, a deafening sound of hooves echoed from their east, signaling the arrival of the Dothraki warriors who had been tasked with the encirclement. Simultaneously, the gates of Thistle Town swung open, and heavily armored heavy cavalry surged onto the battlefield like a steel flood. The infantry, who had been fighting valiantly, immediately cleared the way for the heavy cavalry.
The Queen's heavy cavalry, like a sharp sword, successfully tore through the enemy's ranks with a single charge. Upon receiving orders, the regular soldiers moved swiftly. The battlefield was instantly filled with smoke, the din of battle cries, war drums, and clashing weapons blending into a cacophony. The Queen's army, like a raging torrent, relentlessly breached the Allied forces' defenses. Reserve troops poured out from the city, charging fearlessly at the enemy and engaging in close-quarters combat, further expanding their gains.
On a distant hillside, Randyll Tarly and Oberyn Martell observed the battle. Oberyn exclaimed in astonishment, "Alas, we've lost! The enemy's tactics are truly brilliant; we underestimated the Dragon Queen."
Randyll Tarly's face was grim. "The Queen's forces are stronger than we imagined. They've been feigning weakness all along, lulling us into complacency. We must retreat, or the situation will become increasingly dire for us."
Oberyn: "Retreat where? Back to King's Landing to hold it?"
Randyll Tarly: "There are no reinforcements left. Staying in King's Landing would only mean certain death. I intend to bring as many soldiers back to the Reach as possible, to preserve some strength for the south. Prince Oberyn, what are your plans?"
Oberyn: "Dorne's population is already small. I won't let my people die here for the sake of those in the Red Keep. I must take these lads home."
Randyll Tarly: "Alas, in that case, I wish you well!"
Oberyn: "And I wish you safety!"
A gentle breeze swept through, carrying the heavy scent of blood and the air of victory. Daenerys stood on the city walls, her heart filled with pride as she spread her arms wide. She knew that the war was won. The enemy's main force had been crushed, and the path to the Iron Throne was now open.
In King's Landing, Cersei nearly collapsed upon hearing news of the defeat at the front, only to be caught by the Mountain.
But she sank into deep despair. It's over! The center army has collapsed, over forty percent of the front-line troops are dead, Lord Commander Kevan Lannister is dead, and Prince Oberyn Martell and Randyll Tarly are missing. The surviving troops, after fleeing across the Blackwater Rush, did not return to King's Landing, but continued to flee south.
More importantly, the Dragon Queen's army is already at the gates. King's Landing has only ten thousand Ironborn and three thousand Gold Cloaks to defend it, while the besieging army numbers over fifty thousand. Cersei considered fleeing, but where could she go? The road back to the Westerlands was blocked, and the Blackwater Bay was swarming with enemy fleets. Perhaps she could take Tommen to Highgarden first. The Reach should still have some fight left in it, and if all else failed, they could flee to Oldtown.
She immediately ordered people to find the King, but the guards reported that the King was not in Maegor's Holdfast, and Cersei felt a sense of foreboding. She then went to look for Queen Margaery, but she was nowhere to be found either. Grand Maester Pycelle was also missing.
Cersei's nails dug deeply into her palms, drawing blood. She wasn't stupid; she knew she had been abandoned, but she never thought that her own son would abandon her. According to the returning reports, Aegon VI and his entourage were also gone.
There was a knock on the door, and Qyburn walked in, followed by a bewildered Victarion. "Your Grace..." Qyburn began, but was interrupted by Cersei.
"Your Grace?" Cersei roared in a frenzy. "Now even the King is gone! Tell me! Who can I still trust?"
Victarion had never seen Cersei so distraught, and he silently retreated to the side.
"Your Grace, please calm down," Qyburn said respectfully. "King Tommen... may have been taken away. The enemy has already surrounded King's Landing. Perhaps we should leave as soon as possible."
Cersei glared at him, a flicker of despair in her eyes. "Leave? The sea and land routes have already been cut off. Where can we go?"
Qyburn lowered his head slightly and said softly, "Perhaps it's not time to despair yet. There are still 500,000 people in this city. Your uncle, Lord Tygett, still controls 20,000 men."
Cersei's face turned cruel. "You're right. I won't hand King's Landing over to that Targaryen bitch. She will only get a ruin!"
The gates of King's Landing had been closed when the fleeing soldiers returned. Cersei had ordered that no one was allowed to enter or leave.
At the King's Gate, large numbers of citizens preparing to flee King's Landing were turned back. Adults cried, children wailed, and the scene was apocalyptic. They cursed the damned nobles, and some begged the soldiers to let them leave.
In an inconspicuous corner, two figures walked against the crowd towards the city center. The taller of the two was quite displeased and said in a low voice, "I really shouldn't have come here. It's too dangerous for a noble lady like you."
The shorter one said, "I have my own business to take care of. Some debts must be collected by my own hand! What about you? Why did you come?"
The taller one sighed, "I'm like you. I also have an account to settle with my own hands."
"Then let's cooperate! You should know the way to the Red Keep very well!" The shorter one revealed her face from under her hood. It was Arya Stark.
The taller one was Sandor Clegane. He shook his head helplessly. "Alright, come with me. But I usually use the main entrance." The two walked into an alley and disappeared into the streets.
In Bitterbridge, a group of disguised knights drove several carriages into the town. Loras dismounted in front of the inn and opened the carriage door, helping Margaery down. He said, "We're safe now. We received news not long ago that Earl Tarly has withdrawn part of his army back to the Reach."
Margaery: "Now that we're here, have your brother release Tommen! He should have calmed down now."
Willas nodded to a guard, and two guards opened another carriage and dragged a bound Tommen out.
