Chapter 387 - 386: Why Don’t You Try It Yourself?
Chapter 387 - 386: Why Don’t You Try It Yourself?
"..." A light sweat broke out on Xu Su’s forehead. ’I really put my foot in my mouth,’ she thought. She quickly forced a dry laugh. "What are you talking about? Did I say something? You must have misheard. I didn’t say a thing."
"No, you did..." Shen Chen’s fingertips, resting on the car window, tapped lightly. It seemed he had finally figured out what she meant, and a vein in his temple began to throb.
If that was what she thought of him, then all the bizarre things she had said recently suddenly made perfect sense.
Shen Chen quickly ran through all her weird comments in his head...
After a long moment, he grit his teeth and laughed. "Xu Su, you’re really something else."
"..." His laugh made Xu Su’s scalp tingle. She stammered, "I-I’m sorry..."
"Oh?" Shen Chen’s lips curved into a smirk. "Sorry for what?"
Xu Su felt a pang of guilt. He had been so nice to her, yet she had thought of him like that in her head. "I shouldn’t have made wild guesses about a friend’s private life..."
Shen Chen raised a hand, cutting her off. The smile vanished completely from his face. "So in your eyes, I’m a man who doesn’t have any women around, which must mean there’s something wrong with my body, is that right?"
"...That’s not it, exactly," Xu Su said, her guilt deepening under his questioning. She brought the car to a stop and said earnestly, "I admit that’s what I thought at first, but my opinion changed later, didn’t it..."
That explanation was worse than no explanation at all. Shen Chen’s expression turned terrifyingly dark...
As he stared at her, Xu Su’s voice involuntarily trailed off. She, too, felt that she had gone too far.
"This one’s on me," she said, reaching out to pat Shen Chen’s shoulder like they were buddies. "I promise I won’t make any more wild assumptions about you, okay?"
Shen Chen gave a faint, unreadable smile. "How can you be so sure they were wild assumptions? What if you guessed right?"
"..." Xu Su was silent for a moment. Her eyes showed a flicker of surprise, then lit up with the fires of gossip. "For real?"
"What do you think!" Shen Chen took a deep breath, unable to suppress his anger any longer. He let out a cold, furious laugh. "Xu Su, since you’re so curious, why don’t you come and find out for yourself?"
’Find out for myself?’
Xu Su froze. "What nonsense are you talking about!"
"How is it nonsense?" Shen Chen leaned in closer and took her hand. "Things like this require proof, right? You probably wouldn’t believe me if I just told you... Xu Su, why don’t you come and experience it firsthand?"
"Shen Chen!" Xu Su was genuinely scared now. She quickly shook his hand off and, in a blind panic, unlatched the car door to get out.
’This is terrifying! It’s even more horrifying than that time Gu Yunjia kissed me.’
"Alright, I was just joking with you. Aren’t you usually pretty brave?" Shen Chen pulled her back in, then let go and sat up straight. "Keep practicing. Drive forward, onto the main road."
Xu Su stared at him, uncertain and alarmed, her arms covered in goosebumps. "Were you just trying to get fresh with me?"
"Who comes on to someone like that? If I really wanted to do something, you’d be lying here right now," Shen Chen said, rapping Xu Su’s head in annoyance. "You can imagine me being impotent, but I’m not allowed to scare you a little?"
"..." ’He kind of has a point,’ Xu Su thought, rubbing the spot on her head where he had rapped her. At his urging, she started the car again.
"We’re going on the main road now?" Xu Su was a little excited. "But I can only drive straight."
Shen Chen said leisurely, "Knowing how to drive straight is enough. I’m not asking you to reverse. This stretch of road has less traffic, and large vehicles are prohibited. You can start by getting used to the basics here: dealing with oncoming cars, using your turn signal, changing lanes, making turns, and going through traffic lights."
"Keep your speed around thirty, and as long as you don’t slam on the gas, I guarantee you won’t get into any trouble."
Xu Su was still a little nervous, but hearing his words, she nodded obediently and agreed.
"Steer a little to the right. See the markings on the ground? Put on your right turn signal and get in the right-turn lane."
"Slow down at the crosswalk. No matter what color the light is, slow down first, check the traffic, and then proceed."
Shen Chen said, "Just do what I say. Do it first, and then you can think about the reasons why later."
Xu Su nodded again without any objection, following his instructions to the letter.
"Don’t get too close to the parked cars on the side. Be careful in case someone suddenly opens a door."
Xu Su looked at the parked cars on the right, realized she was too close, and quickly steered a little to the left.
Shen Chen praised her with a smile, "See? You’re driving just fine."
"When you’re driving, just pay attention to a few things: always observe the road conditions, check your rearview mirrors often, be steady when changing lanes, avoid changing lanes or overtaking unless necessary, and be extra careful at intersections."
"Also, with your current skills, don’t drive at high speeds for the next year. Just drive slowly around 30 to 50 in city areas without large trucks. As for the overpasses, if I’m not in the passenger seat, don’t go up there by yourself. Got it?"
Xu Su was completely focused on driving and only managed an "Oh" in response to his words.
The thought of all the tightly packed cars on the overpasses made her scalp tingle. She had no intention of overestimating her abilities and trying to drive on one.
Shen Chen watched her drive so cautiously and remarked, "I’ve figured it out. The only time you’re unbelievably well-behaved is when you’re driving."
She didn’t argue back, no matter what he said.
They didn’t finish the afternoon’s driving practice until the sky grew dark, the streetlights came on, and Xu Su’s stomach was growling with hunger.
In the middle of it all, Zhou Mochen had called to say he wouldn’t be back for dinner. Xu Su, being very understanding, told him to focus on his work.
Shen Chen raised an eyebrow and asked the same question he had at noon.
Xu Su thought for a moment and said, "Let’s go try your chef’s cooking first."
Shen Chen’s house was right next door. The two villas were about the same size, and apart from the different decor, their layouts were quite similar. Xu Su lost interest after a quick look around.
Seeing her lazing on the sofa playing on her phone, Shen Chen pulled her up. "I have a pet turtle here. Want to go see it?"
Xu Su wasn’t very interested, but it was hard to refuse the host’s enthusiastic offer, so she went along to have a look.
She had thought, ’It’s just a turtle, they’re all the same. What’s so special about it?’ But when she saw the real thing, Xu Su was so scared she stumbled back two steps.
"Holy shit!" Staring at the massive creature that looked like a small hill, she exclaimed, "Shen Chen, is this a turtle demon you’re raising?"
"It’s an alligator snapping turtle. It weighs over two hundred pounds," Shen Chen said, pulling her closer with a smile. "Don’t be afraid, it doesn’t bite people. Do you want to try feeding it?"
"No! I don’t want to," Xu Su said, shaking her head frantically. "I won’t even dare to come to your house next time. I mean, Zhou Mochen raises koi fish and flowers. Why do you raise something like this?"
"That scared?" Shen Chen was taken aback. "Alright, I’ll have it moved tomorrow. I thought you’d want to see something new and interesting."
"This is *too* new and interesting. Little turtles are cute, but one this big is just terrifying." Xu Su turned and started walking back. "This turtle scared me so much I’ll probably eat one less bowl of rice tonight!"
