Chapter 584: Get down you monkey!
Chapter 584: Get down you monkey!
"It’s about time he gets a new one."
Veylara stared at the strange sky through her building and smiled, remembering that boy who had left more than a month ago.
"I thought he was getting lazy and I needed to find him and kick him back on track."
She laughed out loud.
Then suddenly, her expression changed as she sensed someone walking through the door of the room she was in.
"It happened again."
The man spoke in a low voice, his green eyes staring at the sky through the window.
"I wonder what this is about."
The woman walking behind him muttered, she too was staring at the sky with strong curiosity.
Veylara turned toward the siblings that had walked in unannounced and—
"Why are you here?"
She questioned.
"Nothing in particular."
Arlan shook his head.
"You just seem... particularly calm, almost... at ease when you look at the sky."
Elira mentioned.
"It is as if you know what this is about."
The Fire Mage commented, looking into her mother’s eyes, as if scanning for an answer. But of course—
"How am I supposed to know anything about it?"
She feigned ignorance and she did it so perfectly that it was impossible to see she was lying through her facial expressions.
But Arlan and Elira didn’t believe her. These two knew better than to trust their mother’s words. They weren’t naïve enough to be fooled this easily.
So Arlan pressed forward.
"These strange phenomena began not long ago, at first there were only a few reports so it was dismissed, but soon more and more reports started stating the same thing clearly, and now we are seeing it with our own eyes.
This isn’t normal, Mother, and you are telling me you are this calm after seeing a different sky?"
"What would you have me do? Pull all my hair out? I know what you are trying to do, boy. I’ll have you know, I have no interest in losing my beauty, not any time soon."
Veylara spoke, moving her hand through her hair like a model.
"I have a long life ahead, I would rather not go bald."
"..."
Arlan looked at his mother with utter disbelief.
Just what is this woman...
He had known her his entire life but he knew he would never get an answer to that question.
"The sky could mean anything, Mother."
Suddenly, Elira spoke up.
"It could be a bad omen or, as many say, Lord Feraos giving us a sign. That does not worry you at all?"
"It is funny to see you talk about Lord Feraos."
Veylara laughed, but Elira wasn’t amused, not one bit.
"I am not here to have an idle chat. I am here because I need an answer."
Elira spoke in a strict tone and for a moment there was silence. Elira rarely used that tone while talking to her mother. She feared her too much to do this regularly.
But this...
This was above her fear.
Because she had a feeling that this different sky was somehow related to Kael, she knew, she just... needed proof, she just needed... an affirmation.
And the only one who could give her that affirmation was her mother, so she was here.
To get an answer to her question.
And Veylara—
"There is no answer.
I do not know—"
"Swear it on our lives."
Elira snapped, glaring at her mother.
Veylara, however, narrowed her eyes at those words.
"I do not do that."
"I want you to do it today."
Elira didn’t back down and Veylara—
Her expression began to change, so much that Arlan placed his hand on his sister’s shoulder, as if trying to stop her. Veylara looked at her son and—
"What happened to her?"
She asked.
She knew Elira didn’t normally act like this.
"She has been looking for clues, ways to find Kael ever since he left, but she hasn’t made any progress. So now she believes these phenomena are linked to Kael, considering they started after Kael came to this world."
Arlan explained, Elira lowered her eyes when those words were being said and Veylara just frowned.
"That’s quite a bogus reason."
She commented and Arlan just shrugged.
"This is the only thing she has, hence the desperation.
So Mother, if you do know anything about it, please tell us. At least tell us if what she is thinking is true, are these... truly related to Kael?"
Arlan asked in a pleading tone, almost as if he was tired of seeing his sister act the way she did.
Veylara looked at her children, first at her son then her daughter, then she looked around. They were in Stormhold territory, far from Drakthar’s capital, she had made both Arlan and Elira leave their posts back in the capital and called them here so...
Thinking about it, they were considerably safe.
No one would dare to do anything to her children in her territory, at least not anytime soon.
So...
"Yes."
Veylara decided to reveal the truth.
"It is linked to Kael."
The moment she said those words, both Arlan and Elira looked at her with bright eyes. Veylara could practically see the mountains of questions they were about to shoot her with but before they could even open their mouths, she raised her hand and—
"The only other thing I will tell you about this is that whatever is happening in the sky is a good thing.
It means Kael is growing and that... he is alive.
As for where he is, what he is doing, who he is with, I do not know any of that. Neither do I plan on finding out because if I did, I fear that information would disturb whatever it is that Kael has been planning."
Veylara spoke carefully, looking at both her children, then her eyes settled on Elira and—
"And I suggest you do the same."
She spoke.
"If he wants to contact us, he knows how and once he does require us, he will. Till then, do not approach him, you might put his safety at risk."
"He was the safest with us!"
Elira answered almost instantly, it was clear how angry she was about the fact that Kael had left. She had already sworn that when she saw him again, she was going to burn him to cinders and she was very, very serious about it.
"He clearly did not feel that way."
Arlan shook his head with a lost, empty laugh.
Then he turned toward Elira and—
"It’s all your fault. Who told you to go around threatening to burn him alive all the time!? You must have scared him.
And it’s only natural.
How can anyone not be scared by an unstable fool with too much power like you? I was surprised that the poor guy managed to survive this long."
"YOU!!"
Elira’s anger rose even further.
"You come here!"
She screamed as she jumped on top of Arlan’s shoulders and began pulling his hair.
"AA—Aggghhhhh!!! Get down you monkey!"
Arlan screamed as he grabbed Elira’s hands while moving quickly, trying to shake her off. Elira obviously didn’t give up.
"Me? I did it? It was obviously you! You were the one who trained him to a near-death state! How can any sane man take that for WEEKS!!
It was all your fault!!"
Elira screamed as she continued to pull Arlan’s hair.
"AaaaaGGggghhh!!! Get down you little shit!!"
Arlan continued to run but Elira wasn’t leaving and it was clear.
Veylara watched the mess in front of her, but this time her reaction wasn’t the same as it usually was.
This time, she was looking at her foolish children with a light smile on her face. Then, at one moment, her eyes met Arlan’s.
The eldest paused for a very slight moment, Veylara nodded at him, he nodded back with a smile, almost as if saying *"I will take care of her,"* and continued running while screaming and cursing at Elira, who seemed very serious about pulling all his hair today.
Veylara laughed again, then she turned back toward the window and looked at the sky, which was now returning to normal.
And in her mind, she once again recalled that child, the child whom the entire Nerathis was trying to find.
"You can’t hide forever, I hope you know that and are preparing for the day you... return. Till then, I’ll hold on as long as I can."
She muttered, not to anyone in particular, maybe she was hoping he somehow heard her. Veylara then laughed at her own thoughts.
The sky returned to normal and she finally looked away, then she kicked her children out of her room and lay on her bed, wanting to rest a little.
It was an uncommon sight, especially for someone like Veylara who... never rested more than required, she was more the kind to push her body beyond its limits and collapse from exhaustion than someone who lay down to rest willingly.
But Veylara...
She was just enjoying the little peaceful time that was left before—
Before everything falls apart and the world burns.
